Planning event details and decor is so much fun but can quickly become expensive. DIYing some of the details can save money. One area where DIY efforts can lead to significant savings is creating your own event signs. Instead of spending hundreds of dollars on professional signs, you can create a beautiful and personalized sign that will add a special touch to your event. Here’s how to do it!
Step-by-Step Guide to Making Your Own Event Sign
Design Your Sign
Start by designing your sign. You can use design software like Canva or Adobe Spark, which offer user-friendly templates for various occasions, or simply create one from scratch. Be sure to include essential details, such as the event name, date, and any other relevant information. Once you’re satisfied with the design, save it in a high-resolution format suitable for printing.
I created my sign in Canva in the size 20×30 inches. I downloaded a JPEG in the highest quality available. The size was 6000×9000 pixels.
Order Your Print
For a professional look, order a large poster print of your design. Walgreens often has sales on photo prints, making it an affordable option. A 20×30” poster print typically costs significantly less than a custom sign from a company, especially during promotions. Check their website for current deals, and upload your design directly for printing. My 20×30 inch sign was $10.40.
Attach Your Print to a Foam Board
Once your print is ready, gather the materials needed for assembly:
- A 20×30” foam board (available at craft or office supply stores)
- Adhesive – I used this spray adhesive. You could use double sided tape or your adhesive of choice.
Add adhesive to the foam board, then carefully attach the poster print to the front of the board.

Add Flowers to Your Event Sign
The event sign is great as is, but if budget allows, add some florals.
Here are the supplies I used:
- A floral foam cage if using fresh flowers. If you are using silk flowers, you can use a pool noodle instead of the foam cage.
- Fresh flowers of your choice (consider seasonal blooms for cost efficiency). Include some greens. I love how the eucalyptus stems looked. I just picked up make your own bouquet packs at the grocery store. Bonus if you live near a Trader Joes.
- Zip ties and floral wire – you could just use floral wire if you don’t have zip ties
- Easel – I borrowed an easel from a friend. If you want the same look as the one I did, just make sure there is something beneath the sign to attach your floral foam cage to
Steps to Attach Flowers to Your Event Sign:
- If you are using fresh flowers, first soak the floral foam cage in water.
- Place plastic or a trash bag below the sign to catch drips as you assemble the sign.
- Attach the floral foam cage to your easel using floral wire and zip ties if you have them.
- Trim flowers and place them into the floral foam until you get the desired design.
Your DIY Event Sign is Ready to Party!
When the day of your event arrives, find a prominent spot for your sign. It can be displayed near the entrance or set up at the main area where guests will gather. The combination of a custom print and fresh flowers creates an eye-catching display that will impress your guests. It’s also a great prop for event photos.
Creating your event sign not only saves money but also adds a personal touch that can make your event feel more special.
With a little creativity and effort, you can craft a stunning event sign that enhances your celebration without breaking the bank. By ordering a 20×30” print during a sale and combining it with a foam board and fresh flowers, you create a memorable piece that reflects the style of the event and saves money.
