White curtains and bamboo shades are a beautiful and neutral coastal window treatment that can work in any room. White curtains add a softness and finishing touch to most design styles. Bamboo shades bring the option of privacy while adding a touch of warmth. I think they look beautiful as part of our coastal home decor and definitely dressed up our coastal windows at a budget friendly price point.
I am floored by the cost of some window treatments but really wanted to get this look for less in our coastal home. I set out on a mission to find budget friendly beach house window treatments, specifically, white curtains and bamboo shades. Read on for all the details on where we purchased all of our window treatments, along with tips on measuring and installing.
Budget-Friendly Coastal Bamboo Shades
We looked for quite some time and finally settled on these cordless bamboo privacy shades in the color Driftwood (how coastal!)
The wood tone was exactly what I was looking for. They are beautiful! This is the amazon link for the size I used but Amazon has most sizes available in case you want to compare prices.
Coastal Bamboo Shade Measurements:
Measure your window to make sure you order the correct size. Before measuring, you will need to decide if you want to mount the shades on the outside of your window, or inside. We went with an inside mount. For the shades we used, Radiance created this guide to measure your windows:
Coastal Bamboo Shade Installation:
To keep this project low budget, I didn’t want to pay for installation. I installed them myself and I would consider myself a DIY beginner. Where there is a will, there is a way! I do have a cordless drill and bits like this set which is easier to use than you might think and always makes me feel accomplished. If you don’t have a cordless drill and bits and plan to install your coastal window treatments yourself, I definitely recommend getting one – or even better and more cost effective, borrow one from a friend.
Budget-Friendly White Curtains
In this space, I didn’t want blackout curtains but I also didn’t want sheer. These inexpensive curtain panels fell somewhere in the middle and allowed the perfect amount of light in as you can see in the photos. What a deal for two panels per pack! The crisp white adds to the beach house window treatment vibe.
I like the look of floor to ceiling curtains with a little bit of break or puddle on the floor so I ordered the 108 inch panels for my 9 foot ceiling room (with crown molding.) Be sure to measure from your curtain rod to the floor, and if you want them to break or puddle a little, add a few inches to your measurement. Mine have an extra four inches on the floor.
I didn’t have curtain rods yet but knew that I would install them just below the crown molding so I measured from the bottom of the crown molding to the floor. That measurement came to 104 so ordering the 108 inch gave me a four inch puddle. If that’s too much of a puddle for your taste, adjust accordingly.
Budget-Friendly Coastal Curtain Rod
I wanted just a basic dark curtain rod that didn’t break the bank. I chose this cafe-style rod from Wal-Mart at a very reasonable price point. Here again, make sure you measure your window to order the correct size. Typically I would extend the rod beyond the edges of the window so that the curtains hang just outside of the window, making the windows appear larger. That would not work in this space since our wet bar and coffee bar were right next to our windows. If you want your curtain panels to extend beyond the windows, I recommend adding an additional 12 inches to your total measurement, leaving six inches on either side of the window.
As with the bamboo shades, I installed the curtain rods myself using a cordless drill set. Be sure to install the hardware six inches on either side of the window if you want your curtain panels to rest on the sides when open. Installation wasn’t the easiest thing to do but I did it and so can you!
PRICE ESTIMATE
A price projection for the bamboo shades, white curtains and curtain rod would be around $50-$60 per window for the curtain set and rod, then add in an additional $35 to $65 for each bamboo shade, depending on what size you need.
THE LOOK FOR LESS
These budget-friendly coastal bamboo shades and white curtains look more high-end than they actually are and I’m very happy with how they turned out.
