A paper bag pinata is a fun little addition to a fiesta or Cinco de Mayo party or any party for that matter! You can make the pinata in rainbow colors for a rainbow party which seems to be all the rage this year. Each child can have their own or share if it’s only for two or three people.
This would also be an awesome end of the year gift for your child’s classmates. They are fairly easy to make, in fact, you can get the kids involved in making their very own DIY paper bag pinata. Disclaimer: I can’t take credit for the idea, I got the inspiration here.
Mini Pinata Supplies
We are sharing the step by step process of how to make one of your own. But first, you’ll need to gather these supplies:
- Paper lunch bag
- Tissue paper
- Glue or tape
- Scissors
- Hole punch
- String
- Candy or small, lightweight toys or goodies to put inside
Instructions for Creating a Mini Paper Bag Pinata
Below are the steps, but if you would like a video of the sped-up creation of this mini pinata, see our Youtube short of the process here.
Step one: Fill your paper bag with goodies and tissue paper so that the bag is not too heavy yet full.
Step two: Fold over the top and staple the paper bag pinata shut.
Step three: Cut strips of tissue paper long enough to wrap around the outside of the bag.
Step four: Cut fringe on each strip to give it that pinata look.
Step five: Beginning at the bottom attach each strip of tissue paper using glue or tape, overlapping each layer a little bit.
Step six: When you get to the top, cut a piece of tissue paper wide enough to fold over and cover the top of the bag. Fold the tissue paper in half and cut a fringe so that when you place it on top, there will be fringe on both sides. Attach it with glue or tape (I just made tape balls to put underneath this layer so you wouldn’t see it.)
Step seven: Using your hole punch, punch two holes at the top.
Step eight: String the paper bag pinata so it’s ready to be hung.
Step nine: If you want your paper bag to have a tail, just cut a few more strips of tissue paper and attach them to the bottom of the bag.
My kids were over the moon excited about their paper bag pinata! We can’t wait to make them for our next Cinco de Mayo party! Imagine the excitement of their friends when they find out they get their very own pinata to either take home as a party favor, or break open as part of the party festivities. No more tears over not being the one to break open the pinata!
