DIY Wood Bead & Tassel Napkin Rings

Store bought napkin rings can be so beautiful but the cost can add up when you need several. I really wanted napkin rings for a special dinner we were hosting but wanted to spend my budget on other details. DIY napkin rings were the answer and I made ten for less than the typical cost of one! What better way to procrastinate cleaning my home for the dinner than to make DIY wood bead napkin rings?!

I’m loving all things wood beads and tassels lately and just so happened to everything I needed on hand so it was an easy decision . Here is what you’ll need:

  • 12 mm natural wood beads <–click for link – there will be plennnnty left over for future wood bead DIY’s
  • Jute Twine <–click for link – you can use the extra for holiday gift wrapping
  • Scissors
  • A pencil or other any long thin object to hold your twine while you tie it together – I just used a golf tee (I know, random, but it was the first thing I found)
  • A small piece of cardboard cut to the size you want your tassels to be – I chose 3″. If you don’t have cardboard laying around you can even use your fingers to wrap the twine around.

Steps:

Begin making your DIY wooden bead and tassel napkin rings by making the twine tassels. I used cardboard to wrap my tassels as that is what I had done in a previous project with my kids. You can also easily use your fingers instead of the cardboard. Sometimes a video is worth a thousand words so here is a great video tutorial on how to make a tassel. If you prefer written instructions, follow these directions:

Begin by wrapping the twine around the piece of cardboard (or four fingers) not too tightly to your desired tassel thickness. Mine were seven wraps. Once you are finished wrapping, cut the twine. Slip your pencil (or whatever long thin object you chose) between the cardboard (or your fingers) and the twine. Slip the wrapped twine off of the cardboard/fingers.

Use a piece of twine to tie a knot below where your pencil is holding the twine.

Slip a piece of twine long enough to create the napkin ring through the hole where your pencil is and remove the pencil.

Add desired number of wood beads to the piece of twine. You can cover the entire ring with wood beads for a more finished look. I just chose two on each side as you can’t really see them on the back and why not save them for another wood bead project?! (I have my eyes set on some wood bead Christmas ornaments and, now that I think of it, these rings might double as Christmas ornaments, haha.) You can knot the twine next to the wood beads if you prefer they don’t slide around.

Next, cut the bottom of your tassel so the twine is no longer looped at the bottom.

Wrap the twine that will become the ring around your wrapped silverware or any object that is the size you want your ring to be. Knot it in the back. You won’t want to make the rings so small that they are too tight around the wrapped silverware or napkin as you’ll want your guests to be able to easily slip them off. I double knotted the back and trimmed the excess so that I don’t need to re-tie them every time I use them.

These look cute with wrapped silverware and, in my opinion, even cuter with a cloth napkin pulled through:
