Ingredient Options for Patriotic Ice Cubes

You can use several different options for ingredients in your red white and blue ice cubes. When deciding which ones to use, consider what types of drinks you will use the ice cubes in so you don’t end up with too many competing flavors. Here are some great options:

Ingredients to Make Red Ice Cubes

  • strawberries pureed with a little bit of water – what I used
  • grenadine
  • blood orange juice
  • red Kool-Aid
  • red raspberries pureed with water
  • watermelon puree
  • water and red food dye
  • fruit punch
  • tomato juice for a savory patriotic beverage like a bloody mary

Ingredients to make White or Clear Ice Cubes:

  • Water with white non pareils – what I used – warning: the non pareils disintegrate in liquid so if white specks floating around in your patriotic drink is a problem, skip the non pareils.
  • Water only – simple and won’t compete with the other flavors in your drinks – this will be my future go-to for “white” ice cubes
  • Coconut cream – don’t use Coco Lopez or Coco Real or others that have additives as it doesn’t freeze (ask me how I know) Use only pure coconut cream
  • Whipped cream or cool whip
  • water with red white and blue jimmies – warning: these also disintegrate in liquid leaving lots of floaties in your drinks

Ingredients to Make Blue Ice Cubes:

  • blue Kool-Aid
  • water and blue food die
  • Water and blueberries (blueberries tend to look purple when frozen though)
  • Blue raspberry juice
  • berry blue Hawaiian Punch
  • Blue gatorade
  • Blue Tum-e Yummies

Silicon Star Ice Cube Tray

Silicon molds are great for making ice cubes since the flexibility of the tray makes it easy to pop them out.

I especially love the mold that came in this set since it’s not only a star shape, but also has a little more detail on the top of the stars. It came in a set with other shaped trays and two droppers so the set can be used for more than just patriotic occasions.

How to Make Star Shaped Ice Cubes

Fill the star molds with the liquid of your choice and freeze. Depending on the size of your star ice cubes, it may take anywhere from two to four hours. Mine froze in two.

Once the star ice cubes are frozen, simply pop them out. The great thing about silicone molds is you can easily push the ice cubes out without too much trouble and without them breaking. You can store them in a container in the freezer until you are ready to put them into your patriotic drink of choice. Make a few batches if you need extra.

Serving Red White and Blue Star Ice Cubes

Keep your star ice cubes frozen until just before serving.

I like to fill my glass with mostly plain ice cubes then top them with the star shaped red white and blue ice cubes so they don’t melt in right away. They are like the cherry on top of the patriotic drinks.

If you use the edible glitter in your ice cubes, your drinks will become shimmery as they melt into the drink. So pretty and festive!

Other Garnishes to add to Patriotic Drinks

In addition to the red white and blue ice cubes, you could also use a few other things to elevate your Fourth of July or Memorial Day drinks. Here are a few ideas:

  • toss in some blueberries and strawberry slices or cherries
  • a cocktail pick with strawberry and blueberries – what I used here in my patriotic Moscow Mule:
